Xolo Unveils Premium Online Sub-Brand 'Black'; First Phone With Dual Rear Cameras Coming in June

Xolo announced plans to unveil a new sub-brand called Black. Xolo Black smartphones will not be sold through traditional retail channels and will be available online via the company's yet-to-be-confirmed preferred e-commerce partner. The first Xolo Black smartphone will launch in June and it will come with a dual rear camera setup with depth-sensing support, similar to the one seen in the HTC One (M8). This means, with the right software, you could point your smartphone's camera at real-life objects and find their dimensions in an instant, and do other cool things like refocussing pictures after you've clicked them. The phone will come with Hive 1.5, an update to the company's in-house UI, which is now built on top of Android Lollipop. It will also have 4G support and will be priced in the "sub-Rs. 15,000 segment."



Vishal Sehgal, Co-Founder and Director of Lava International Ltd., the company that owns the Xolo brand, said all Xolo Black phones - Xolo plans to release 5-6 Black smartphones every year, priced between Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 20,000 - will come with Hive 1.5 or above and will support 4G. Black is being positioned as "the premium end of Xolo."


While that pricing won't give sleepless nights to other online brands like Xiaomi and Micromax's Yu, Sehgal is convinced Black can find its space in what's starting to look like a really crowded market. He believes customers want the "best value" and not necessarily the cheapest product, which gives the him confidence they will opt for the Xolo experience over phones that aim to "offer the best specs/ price ratio."


Xolo believes there are four key features that consumers look for in a smartphone: camera, industrial design, battery, and audio performance. Sehgal said every Xolo Black smartphone will look at "maximising" one of these features while "optimising" the other three. With the first Black smartphone, Xolo is obviously focussing on camera performance.


When asked whether Xolo Black smartphones will be available via the infamous flash sale model, Sehgal said the company didn't believe in "gimmicks," but was otherwise non-committal, saying details will be shared when the first smartphone is launched. He added that the company is exploring a tie-up with a telecom operator for marketing, as well as in-store sales that will also allow customers to experience Xolo Black smartphones first-hand before making a buying decision.

LG G5 Release Date: New Device to extremely differs From G4?

The LG G4 may have hit the stores just a few weeks ago but people have started talking about the company's next flagship smartphone dubbed as the LG G5. The upcoming device is expected to come with a special feature not seen in the recently released G4, and that is iris scanner.




Interestingly, people have started speculating on the release date of the LG G5 though it is still almost a year to go before seeing the light of the day. Reports have claimed that the next-generations device could be launched in the first half of 2016 after the G4 completes a one year cycle in the market.


WhoWired has claimed citing local reports that the LG G5 will feature an iris scanner and that Korea-based firm specialized in biometrics called IRIENCE has "completed the development of a hardware module for the iris recognition technology" and is currently upgrading its algorithm process including increasing the recognition range from around 30 cm to 50 cm." 


IRIENCE is expected to complete the development of the technology in two or three months, according to the report.


Introduction of an iris scanner will please the users as it will strengthen security of a device. The new technology will set LG apart from its competitors like Apple and Samsung.


Not much is known about the features of the LG G5 but it should come with several feature upgrades over its predecessor. The LG G4 sports a 5.5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1440 x 2560 pixels (538 ppi pixel density), powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 and run on Android 5.1 Lollipop. It comes packed with 32 GB internal memory expandable up to 128 GB and 3 GB RAM, houses a 16 MP main camera and 8MP front snapper, and a Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery.

Google is bringing Individual app permissions control to Android M

In this morning  Google would be announcing granular permission controls at Google I/O 2015, and that’s exactly what happened during this morning’s keynote. Google has just announced Android M, and a big part of the new version of the OS is more user control over individual app permissions.



Till  now, when installing an app, you granted permission for everything with no control over exactly what you were approving. With the new system, you’ll be asked to approve each category of permissions the first time the app tries to access that feature of your phone, instead of approving all of them upon installation of the app. Users will be able to allow or deny app access to six different permissions – contacts, phone, camera, location, microphone and SMS.

Motorola has no immediate plans to sell devices retail in India


Motorola re-entered the Indian market with its popular Moto series, sold exclusively on Flipkart. It was soon followed by Xiaomi and OnePlus and several others who opted for online channels. Recent reports claim Xiaomi plans to go offline, but looks like Mototrola has no such plans.


According to a report by The Times of India, Amit Boni, the India business head of Motorola said the company would continue its exclusive partnership with Flipkart and has ‘no immediate plan to sell its smartphones through retail stores’ here.
He said that a company looks into other sales channels only when their current channel isn’t ‘sound enough’.


Though the company doesn’t plan to go offline, it has opened the first ‘Moto Care’ flagship center in India. Located on Jayanagar road, Bangalore, the Moto Care center is spread across 3000 sq. ft. and claims to provide best-in-class service and support to customers.


It comes with a service and support area, offering users a walk-in service experience with highly trained support staff. There’s also an Experience Zone that will allow consumers to experience the product. This area at the centre will showcase the entire product portfolio – Moto X (including leather and wood versions), Moto G, Moto E, Moto Turbo, Motorola Nexus and Moto 360. It will further guide users on how to purchase the device via Flipkart.

You can only remove the Google Search strings that you made when you are logged into the Google account.
If you were not logged into the Google account, the search strings were tracked by Google but they were not linked to your name. Instead they were linked to the IP address of the computer. You cannot remove them.
Searching without logging into Google account gives slightly more privacy but your web searches are still tracked. like that, using incognito mode gives you a bit more privacy but Google still connects the dots to track users.

All important security pin/password/pattern anything


This is one of the most primary steps to ensure your smartphone is locked for anyone but you, at all times. However, as basic as it may seem, most people are too lazy to set it up. Setting up a screen lock is very important, as is setting it up right. Make sure your pin/password is not lame enough as say, a 1234 so that anyone can crack it in first go. At the same time, don't make it so confusing that even you don't remember it. It's totally your call.


Ideally, you should select a combination of numbers and alphabets.
In addition, set your screen lock time somewhere between 1-5 minutes of non-use.

Every smartphone OS, whether it be Android, iOS, BlackBerry or Windows Phone comes with some kind of remote tracking and wiping tool. Android phones have what you call a Device Manager, while iPhones come with Find My iPhone and so on.


Essentially, these tools/services come into play when your phone is lost/misplaced or stolen. Using these tools, you can remotely lock, track, and even wipe your phone data using a computer and Internet. The trick here is to have these tools up and running on your smartphones at all times.

Download some kind of file lock app


There has to be something on your smartphone, whether it be a chat, a picture or anything for that matter, that you would want to save from prying eyes at all times, even from close ones. There may be some apps that you don't want others using your phone to access.
A file lock app comes handy in such situations. There are many good ones available in app stores.


Download and install them, then password protect the data that you wish to hide. Only you or someone who has the password can then access them.

Set up a Guest Mode/Parental Lock on your phone


Android 5.0 Lollipop and iOS 8, the latest iterations from Google and Apple come with something called as Guest Mode. Basically, the trick is to restrict access to the content on your Android/iOS smartphone when you're giving it to somebody.


Using the Guest Mode, you can create a separate user profile on your smartphone and assign it with the apps and content that you deem fit to be accessed by someone else. Once you have this profile up and running, next time you hand over your phone to someone you simply have to enable Guest Mode and he/she will gain access to this profile, hiding all the other stuff.
The normal profile will be password protected and cannot be accessed until it is typed in right.

Update your Smartphone software regularly


Software developers release periodic updates to their software, improving upon an already existing version. These improvements include security and stability updates as well.


Therefore, as and when updates (no matter how big or small) come up for your OS, for instance, make sure you update it, and have latest version running on your smartphone at all times.
It's more important from a security point of view, since these updates may have some fix for some security issue that might be plaguing an earlier version. Also, software developers tend to push out fixes to security bugs (as and when something is detected) therefore it is highly advisable to update your phones periodically.

Beware of installing apps from untrusted sources


Android smartphones have something called an Unknown Sources option in security settings. Checking it allows you to install third-party apps from sources other than Google's official Play Store. You don't have such an option in the iPhone, and you need to jailbreak it if you want to install third-party apps.


Ideally, you mustn't do either of these. Always install apps from trusted sources, meaning the Google Play Store and the iTunes Store. Apps therein meet the desired standards of official safety and security. Everything else is just calling for unnecessary trouble.

Keep your location settings in check


Every smartphone now comes with a built-in GPS or location tracking feature. Essentially, these keep your apps and services like 
Google Maps and others live and active at all times. While, it may seem convenient to have your location settings open for such apps, even others like Facebook, Twitter etc, there may come a time when you don't want others to know where you are.
But more than anything, you wouldn't want your apps to know where you are, at all times. It is possible to individually allow/deny apps to ascertain your location. You can control your location settings, even shut it off completely.

Facebook users donate $10 million To Nepal Earthquake


Social networking website Facebook has raised funds over $10 million within two days to support earthquake-torn Nepal. The Himalayan nation was rattled by a powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on Richter Scale on April 25 which left over 6,000 dead and injured more than 10,000.



"We gave people the option on Facebook to support local relief efforts. In two days, more than half a million people donated and raised more than $10 million to support the International Media Corps relief effort," a status posted by Facebook founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg said.


"Facebook will donate an additional $2 million to local recovery efforts to help those in affected areas."


The popular social media platform had also activated a safety feature where more than seven million people in Nepal have been marked as safe.


The Facebook CEO has also stated that it is inspiring to see communities coming together to help people in their time of need.

Google Introduce Project Fi Mobile Telephone Service

Google Inc launched a new U.S. wireless service that switches between Wi-Fi and cellular networks to curb data use and keep phone bills low. The service, Google's first entry into the wireless industry, will work only on the company's Nexus 6 phones and be hosted through Sprint Corp and T-Mobile's networks, Google said in a statement.





The service, called Project Fi, will automatically switch between the two networks and more than 1 million open, free Wi-Fi spots, depending on which signal is strongest.


The service will cost $20 a month plus $10 per gigabyte of data used. Customers will get money back for unused data.


Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president of products, said at a Barcelona conference last month the company was preparing to experiment with a mobile network, but that it did not intend to disrupt the wireless industry.


The service will be available on only one device and has limited carrier coverage, so it will not make Google a major wireless industry player, said Brian Blau, research director at Gartner.

If successful, however, Google's service could pressure wireless providers to further lower prices and better adapt to the rise of tablets and wearable devices, Blau added. Though some carriers, such as T-Mobile and AT&T Inc, allow unused data to roll over, most mobile plans require customers to pay for a set amount of data each month.

But Google first has to "test out features they think are going to differentiate themselves," Blau said, such as being able to transition from network connectivity to Wi-Fi.

Phone numbers will live in the cloud so that consumers can talk and text on any connected tablet, Google said.


The company already has a strong presence in the mobile market through its Android operating system, which hosts some of the most popular apps, such as Gmail and Google Maps.

For instance, if you're using the trackpad and then the trackpad above the line will act as a click and if you are typing and you click anywhere above the line, it will act as a space bar. Keypads have remained in the same format for the longest time in technology-history, but with growing functions and a restricted hardware setup, it seems limiting to companies like Google to move on without making necessary changes.

Originally priced at Rs 17,999, the leather-strap variant of the Android Wear-powered smartwatch is now available at Rs 12,999 on e-commerce website Flipkart. How to set up your Own YouTube video show

Create a YouTube channel



Go to http:www.youtube.comcreate_channel. You can either use your existing Gmail login ID and password, or create a new Google account for your channel.



After signing in, a Use YouTube as...pop-up will appear. Here, click "To use a business or other name, click here" to give your channel a name. Select a category whether Arts and Entertainment, Sports, How-Tos, Music, News and Politics, Comedy, etc; agree to the terms and click 'Finished.'

Get acquinted with the YouTube interface 

1. The left pane lets to switch between My Channel (your content), My Subscriptions (other channels that you subscribe to), History (log of the videos you watched), Watch Later (where you can create a list of videos for future viewing by hovering and clicking on the clock icon at the bottom right corner of any clip.)


2. The centre panel has a link to the Video Manager (which allows you to edit your clips, add audio, make your videos private or public, etc), your channel profile, uploaded videos, playlists...


3. The top right hand corner of the page is where you will find the Upload button. This gives you multiple options to publish content to your channel. Clicking your profile photo will give you access to Creator Studio, where you can organize and maintain your videos.

Pre-shoot planning

If you want people to visit and revisit your video channel, you will need to plan each shoot diligently. Before you start shooting, work on a script with dialogues; try a couple of practise sessions. Get used to talking to the camera (try and maintain eye contact with the lens.)


If there are two or more people in the video, work on the interactions and dialogue delivery so that it seems natural and not scripted (even though it is.)


And importantly , make sure you have a good microphone (preferably out of view) that captures sound clearly; lighting that's focused on your subject, and a backdrop that's clutterand distraction-free.


Lights, camera, action! Wait!


Not so fast! You'll need video shooting software. Download and install the free Debut software-clickhere


To start recording, launch the software and select a capture mode: Device (webcam), Network (network camera) or Screen (to record actions on your PC screen). In this case, choose Device.


In the panel below the video screen, there are options that let you set the file format. Choose either MP4 or AVI. You don't need to change the encoder (video compression technique) setting because Debut uses H.264 by default, which is recommended by YouTube.


Click the Video Options button if you want to change the video resolution of your recording (higher resolution videos will result in larger uploads.)


The panel also includes options to add a title, adjust the brightness contrast levels, apply a colour filter or add a watermark to your footage.


Click on the Record button when you are ready to shoot.


When you click the Stop button, Debut saves the video automatically to its own folder within My Videos.


Click on the Recordings button to view and play all the work you have done, connect to and share the video to your YouTube account.


Manage videos from your smartphone


You can use the YouTube app to upload videos on your handset to your channel. Just make sure you do it over a Wi-Fi connection to avoid data charges. To manage what you have already uploaded, view comments and statistics, install YouTube Creator Studio. This app also lets you edit video description, switch from public to private view, flag comments and more. Both apps are available for Android and iOS devices.

Promotion 

Once you've uploaded your videos, promote your home production on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and any communication or social networking platform you can find. Make it a point to engage with your YouTube audience to maintain their interest.

Upload and edit


Go back to your YouTube page. Click on the Upload button (in the third panel in the YouTube screenshot), select your file to upload, and choose whether you want your file to be Public (accessible to all), Unlisted (won't be visible in your video channel or show up in search results), or Private (viewable only to people you share the link with).


Once uploaded, your clip will get processed by YouTube.


You can edit your video once it appears in your Video Manager (second panel in the YouTube screenshot).


From here you can enhance the footage by using YouTube's autofix feature; you can adjust contrast, brightness, saturation, colour temperature, and even add filters.


At the bottom right of the screen, you will find controls that let you trim your video, flip it, and even slow it down. Here, you will also find the Try the YouTube Video Editor button. Clicking this will let you cut, edit, add transitions to your clip for a more professional production.


YouTube has a whole host of features that even lets you record a video and create a photo slideshow, but this will require you to be online all the time through the process.


With sufficient amount of experimenting with Debut and YouTube — both of which boast of an intuitive user interface - you will soon be recording, uploading and editing videos like a pro video producer.

Now Choose What You Share When Signing In With Facebook Login

Facebook has launched the new Facebook Login tool. The updated tool, as mentioned by the firm previously, focuses on giving the user the option to choose what they share with third-party apps and websites they log in to using their Facebook credentials.




Until now, users had no option but to share their Facebook information when they signed into apps or websites via Facebook Login. Either the app got all the details including the birth date, email address, access to friend list, profile and more or the users would have to create an account and remember another set of credentials.


With the updated Facebook Login (seen above), users will be able to choose what data an app will be able to access. "For example, if someone wants to share their email address with an app, but not their birthday, they can make that choice with a couple taps," said the firm last year while introducing the tool. The app or website will also not be able to post anything on Facebook without user's permission.


When users tap "Log in with Facebook" in an app, they will now be navigated to the Facebook Login page where they can tap on "Edit the info you provide" to choose what details they want to share with the app or website. Within the option users can simply uncheck the info they don't want to share with the app or website.


Notably, Facebook gave developers an year to make suitable changes needed in their apps to integrate smoothly with the new Login Page, the time which was up on Thursday. According to Simon Cross, Facebook Product manager, the app is likely to crash after the new Login Page if the developer has not yet made the app compatible with the tool, reports Recode.

Last June, in the basement of the Microsoft visitor center in Redmond, Washington, Todd Holmdahl, a Microsoft hardware guru, and others nervously walked Satya Nadella, the new chief executive, through a demonstration of a secret project. More than a hundred people had toiled for several years on the ambitious effort,

which would eventually be called HoloLens. At the time, the HoloLens headset was a clunky web of straps, wires and electronics. But it was able to project images onto lenses in front of people's eyes, adding virtual landscapes and objects on top of the view of the natural world.



The team leaders thought this augmented reality product had the potential to be the next big thing in consumer technology, as ground-breaking as the PC and the smartphone. But this was Microsoft, the company that had managed, time and again, to take ingenious innovation and bungle it on the way to store shelves. Microsoft had its software on smartphones years before Apple released the iPhone. Few cared. A full decade before the Apple Watch, Microsoft introduced its own computer on a wrist. It did not take off.


The HoloLens team members were confident in their creation. But they worried that Nadella, a two-decade Microsoft employee then looking at cost-cutting measures and mass layoffs, would kill it for being too risky and far-out.


Nadella didn't flinch.


"He said right away, 'This is something that we're going to do,'" Holmdahl said. "We are going to create a new product category, and this is the type of thing that Microsoft should be working on."


That response says a lot about the reshaped Microsoft that Nadella envisions - one with fewer internal fiefs and with more willingness to favour big bets on new technologies over protecting legacy cash cows. Part of that rebuilding occurred at a Microsoft conference that started Wednesday in San Francisco, where he sought to mend Microsoft's frayed relationship with software developers, making it easier for them to convert apps written for Apple and Google's mobile operating systems to run on Windows.


In a recent interview, Nadella, 47, said he and the company had learned from its mistakes. His Microsoft understands, he says, the discipline needed to build products that look and feel polished. Every part, from hardware to software to online services, must work in harmony.


"One lesson learned is you've got to finish the scenario with excellence," said Nadella, who speaks in verbal arpeggios, emphasizing points with octave-leaping sentences. "You just cannot stop. You have to complete this, and I think that's where Apple has taught us all what experience excellence means in the creation of categories."




In some ways, Microsoft is already a different place from the infamously balkanised one Nadella inherited from Steven A. Ballmer in February 2014. Not long ago, the company had about a half-dozen internal systems for managing the development of software; Nadella is pushing everyone to use a single one, in the belief that top-notch internal tools will help it create top-notch products.


He has taken up an effort started under Ballmer to end the factional strife inside Microsoft, making the 118,000-strong workforce nimbler. He has rallied them around mantras, like making personal computing more personal through wearables and other devices. To better translate Microsoft's innovation into products people want to buy, he has directed the company's research group, the biggest in the technology industry, to work more closely with product engineers.


And just as important, Nadella has shown a sense of humility. Ballmer once laughed at the iPhone in a television interview. Nadella, in contrast, has aggressively pushed Microsoft's Office software onto Apple and Android devices - the very devices that have eroded Microsoft's influence.


"Their arrogance consumed them," said Marc Benioff, the chief executive of Salesforce.com, a longtime critic of Microsoft whose company reached an agreement to cooperate on software integration with Microsoft last year. "Now with Satya, they have a much more open mind about working with people."


Still, given the company's history, there is plenty of scepticism about whether Nadella can pull off a hit with HoloLens and other inventive products starting to trickle out of the Microsoft pipeline. Analysts have been impressed with Nadella's fast-growing cloud computing business, and the company's stock, up almost 40 percent since he took over, is hovering near a 15-year high. But he hasn't yet shown whether Microsoft can deliver an earthshaking new technology.


At the meeting about HoloLens, Nadella told the team how he wanted the project to proceed. It was not going to be organized like Xbox, the company's video game system, which developed as a semiautonomous republic. He wanted the group to be fully integrated into Microsoft.


That meant collaborating with people developing Skype, the company's online voice and videoconferencing service, as well as the Windows and video games teams. The HoloLens group had already started moving in this direction even before the meeting with Nadella, but his orders galvanized them. Microsoft says HoloLens will go on sale "in the time frame" when Windows 10, its new operating system, is released this summer.


In other words, the HoloLens is only a crucible for the new borderless Microsoft that Nadella is seeking to create. No pressure.


'A Decent Batting Average'
There is a short list of big technology companies that have staged comebacks that restored them to their former glory. Arguably, that list contains just one name: Apple.


Microsoft, which passed the 40th anniversary of its founding in April, is an easy target for critics because its golden era, the 1990s, was eons ago on the digital calendar. For today's young entrepreneurs and software developers, it's hard to believe the Microsoft of 2015, defanged by antitrust battles and strategic missteps, once ruled the industry.


It's also easy to overstate Microsoft's problems. With $22 billion in profit last year, $87 billion in revenue and a cash pile over $95 billion, it often trades places with Google as the second most valuable technology company in the world after Apple. Windows and the Office suite of productivity software continue to print money, especially from corporate customers, despite a spate of premature obituaries. While Ballmer was harshly criticized for his tin ear on technology, more than a dozen new products released under his watch exceeded $1 billion in annual revenue.


Imposing, yes, but Microsoft is rarely named among the future-defining tech companies of today, especially when it comes to the consumer businesses. It is nearly always an afterthought following Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook.


In the interview in early April, Nadella argued that Microsoft's misses should be put in perspective.


"What gets lost is we wouldn't be who we are and as successful as we have been if we didn't have a decent batting average," Nadella said, sitting on a couch in the same understated and window-lined office once occupied by Ballmer and, before that, Bill Gates. "I think we would be dead and gone if we were just mostly failing. It's just that our average in the last five years has not been as great as, let's say, Apple's."


Nadella pointed in particular to tablet computers. Relying for years on other companies to build all tablets running Windows, he says, led to poor products. Now, the company is heavily advertising the Surface, a tablet that Microsoft designs and builds.


Of course, it's one thing to make hardware and another thing to make good hardware.


Attention to detail, so crucial in today's hardware market, has not been Microsoft's strongest suit. When Microsoft first introduced the Surface several years ago, the company did not have a touch-screen-friendly version of its Office applications - the hugely popular programs like Word and PowerPoint - ready to go at the start. It was a bit like trying to sell a car with one wheel missing.


A similar problem arose last year, shortly after Nadella became chief executive. The team working on a new version of Surface was frustrated that it took multiple steps - start the device, enter a password, open an app called OneNote - before a user could start taking notes on the tablet with a stylus.


"By the time you're done, you probably would have said, 'I just would have wrote this down on a piece of paper,'" said Steven Bathiche, a Microsoft researcher who is now part of the Surface team.


Hardware and software groups were unable to resolve their conflicts, each fearing that changes would throw them off schedule.


Nadella was not pleased.


"You're not going to ship this without making it work," Nadella responded at the time. "One of the advantages of being CEO is you say things like that and people rise to the occasion," he said.


By the time the Surface shipped, you could click one button on the stylus to start taking notes.


Translating Innovation Into Sales
A big part of Microsoft's fate rests with its research arm, the quasi-academic group responsible for conjuring breakthroughs that will keep Microsoft relevant for generations to come.


On Monday, Harry Shum, the Microsoft executive vice president who oversees the research operation, was bursting with pride while demonstrating Skype Translator, a new product that incorporates years of work by researchers to convert voice conversations from one language to another in real time.


Shum gamely agreed to conduct a portion of an interview using Skype Translator. Shum sat in his office, and I sat in a conference room down the hall looking at Shum's face on a computer screen. I asked questions in English, and Shum responded in Mandarin, his native tongue. He answered a question in Mandarin about the impact he says Skype Translator can have, and the software spit out an English transcript and synthesized recording seconds later.


The software made mistakes - Skype transcribed his name as "Hairy" - but it got the point across.


"Today we have a lot of obstacles of communication," Shum said, according to the Skype translation. "Because we speak a different language, you speak English, I speak Chinese, if we are not able to understand the two sides, the world would have a lot of problems."


Founded in 1991 by Nathan Myhrvold, Microsoft's chief technology officer at the time, as an early warning system for disruptive new technologies, Microsoft Research occupies a building that has a spacious, multistory atrium, filled with a swirl of employees in T-shirts, jeans and other timeless fashions of tech.


It is the biggest operation of its kind in the technology industry, with more than 1,000 scientists and engineers working in labs as far away as China and Israel. The company's research-and-development spending last year was $11.4 billion.


Spending doesn't guarantee success, however. There is a long history of technology companies fumbling commercial opportunities from research breakthroughs sitting right under their noses. In the 1970s, Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center developed a forerunner of the modern PC, with a graphical user interface and mouse. An outsider who saw it, Steve Jobs, was the one who eventually capitalized on the technology with the Apple Macintosh.




Nadella is trying to avoid missed opportunities. He has pushed researchers and product engineers to work closer than ever before. He invited Shum to attend a regular Wednesday-afternoon meeting of a small group called the product leadership team; Shum is the first representative from Microsoft Research to participate in the sessions.


Inside the old Microsoft, the translation technology could easily have languished as a cool demo and nothing more. Product groups would have been slow to embrace an experimental technology that could introduce new costs not to mention uncertainty into their release schedules.


"Instead of saying, 'Hey, let's see what we can do together,' you'd say, 'Well, when you cross this level of accuracy, come and talk to me, then we'll figure out when we can slot you in,'" said Gurdeep Singh Pall, the Microsoft corporate vice president in charge of Skype.


Breaking down barriers at Microsoft is still a work in progress, but some executives said the tone had changed markedly. "Skype had every reason to push back," said Peter Lee, a corporate vice president at Microsoft Research. "But instead Gurdeep, especially, just embraced this."


"There's an eagerness in the business units to pick up ideas that are going to make a significant difference," said Ed Lazowska, a professor of computer science at the University of Washington, who is on the technical advisory board for Microsoft Research.


Shum, who worked for years as a top engineer on Bing, a distant No. 2 in the search engine market to Google, has seen Microsoft get burned in new technology markets before.


"It's at this very critical moment for the company, and either we build products people love or we will be history," Shum said.


HoloLens, too, is jammed with technologies that started in Microsoft Research, including the display technology used to paint virtual images on lenses in front of people's eyes. It uses cameras developed by Microsoft researchers and first used in Kinect, an Xbox accessory, to map a person's surroundings so virtual objects stay where they're supposed to.


Slick hardware, though, will go only so far. If HoloLens has any chance of becoming a breakout hit, it will need must-have applications - add-ons that will do for augmented reality what wildly popular services like Instagram and Snapchat have done for smartphones.


Changing the Game
At the Microsoft conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, the company showed examples of how HoloLens will be used. In one, a medical school expects to adopt HoloLens to let students learn anatomy. In another, a building developer plans to have clients explore finished architecture while on a project still in construction.


Those examples fill nice niches, but they certainly don't scream mass market. For that, Microsoft is turning partly to games.


In September, Microsoft paid $2.5 billion for "Minecraft," the video game played by tens of millions of people. By January, the logic behind the purchase started to become a little clearer when the company showed the game on HoloLens.


In "Minecraft," players can build and destroy structures, sort of like playing virtual Legos. With the HoloLens, the game is no longer confined to a smartphone or a computer screen, though. Players wearing the headset can decorate the surfaces of a room with "Minecraft" blocks, then destroy them, if they like. In the demonstration Microsoft showed, it was possible to build on a coffee table, then crush it to expose a cave below.


Nadella said HoloLens was a big reason for buying "Minecraft."


"Let's have a game that, in fact, will fundamentally help us change new categories," Nadella said. "HoloLens was very much in the works then, and we knew it."


At least one thing is certain: Microsoft will have a lot of competition. Magic Leap, a closely watched startup that Google has invested in, is developing an augmented-reality device. Virtual-reality headsets from Oculus, owned by Facebook, Valve and Sony, which envelop users with virtual environments, are also on the way.


There is also little evidence so far that the public is clamouring to don a headpiece and wear it for hours. Google Glass is a cautionary tale. The company has pulled back significantly on its aspirations for that computer-in-your-face product, as least for now.


Doubters have already lined up with HoloLens, certain that Microsoft will once again trip over itself. The product looks as if it will be far more expensive than smartphones, which benefit from subsidies from wireless carriers that lower their initial cost. One current Microsoft executive said HoloLens would cost significantly more than a game console, which runs more than $400.


Even if Nadella and other top executives have recognized the need for change, there are still pockets of resistance. Rahul Sood, who ran a venture capital fund inside Microsoft until November, praised Nadella for changing Microsoft, but said there wasn't enough risk-taking below him.


"The part making that harder is there is a big layer of middle management," said Sood, who founded Unikrn, a startup based in Seattle that is focused on competitive gaming. "I think it's slowly changing. I think they need more entrepreneurs in the company."


Even Nadella hints at uncertainty when discussing the kind of impact HoloLens will have.


"I don't want to overhype it like Google Glass and say this is the next," he says, trailing off. "I want us to be deliberate about what it is."


At least with HoloLens, Microsoft appears to be skating to where the puck could be headed in technology, rather than where it has been. Brad Silverberg, a venture capitalist in Seattle and a former senior executive at Microsoft, said he was encouraged that the company was doing that rather than playing catch-up in smartphones.


"That battle is already fought and lost," Silverberg said. "You've got to change the game."
